Apple’s Plans to Equip AirPods and Apple Watch with Cameras

Apple is reportedly looking to incorporate cameras into its AirPods and Apple Watch, with the first models potentially launching by the end of 2027. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Johny Srouji’s team has initiated the development of two new chips, codenamed Glennie for the AirPods and Nevis for the Apple Watch. These chips are designed to efficiently support these cameras and provide real-time video stream analysis for Apple Intelligence applications. The goal is to start production in 2027, indicating that announcements could be made in just over two years.

Enhanced Features with Camera Integration

Integrating a camera into the AirPods could support Apple Intelligence’s visual intelligence feature, which would provide information on various subjects of interest. The exact design and implementation are still under wraps, and Apple is exploring several design avenues. The same goes for the Apple Watch, but with the added potential of enabling FaceTime compatibility and the ability to take selfies. Apple is considering two distinctly different approaches: embedding the camera beneath the OLED screen of the standard Apple Watch, and positioning it on the edge of the Apple Watch Ultra. The latter placement would be more practical for pointing the camera at a subject with an extended arm but would not support FaceTime.
