The popular messaging platform owned by Mark Zuckerberg, WhatsApp, has been drawing increasing attention and user numbers, despite recent criticisms from Pavel Durov, the founder of Telegram. Durov dismissed WhatsApp on social media platform X as merely a “copy” of his own messaging service, Telegram.
During the first quarter of 2025, Meta highlighted an outstanding user count for WhatsApp, indicating significant growth and engagement on the platform.
WhatsApp Now Reaches 3 Billion Monthly Users
Since its acquisition by Facebook in 2014 for $19 billion, WhatsApp has established itself as a leading messaging service in the market. Initially launched in 2009, the platform experienced slow growth but saw a dramatic increase to 2 billion users by 2020, amid the global health crisis.
Mark Zuckerberg himself announced Meta’s Q1 2025 results, revealing that WhatsApp now boasts 3 billion monthly users. This milestone was shared during a remote conference covered by TechCrunch, marking WhatsApp as one of the few platforms worldwide to achieve such a vast user base, alongside Facebook. This positions the messaging service for promising future prospects.
Potential Major Role for Meta AI?
In recent months, Meta has been striving to compete with major artificial intelligence giants like OpenAI and Google Gemini. Just recently, Meta launched a new application, Meta AI, which does not require integration with social networks such as Instagram, Facebook, or WhatsApp.
However, according to Susan Li, Meta’s CFO, WhatsApp remains one of the primary gateways for accessing artificial intelligence technologies. She mentioned that a significant portion of WhatsApp users have already interacted with Meta AI features within the app.
New Features Enhance WhatsApp Usage
While Mark Zuckerberg earlier announced upcoming features for Facebook, Meta appears to be focusing significant efforts on enhancing WhatsApp. In the wake of the interest generated by conversational AI like ChatGPT, Meta has introduced several new capabilities to WhatsApp. This month alone, the platform announced the integration of about a dozen new tools, including document scanning, enhanced video quality, and video update features, further boosting user engagement and functionality.
