Apple Reportedly Developing a Dedicated Home Automation Camera, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman Reports
Apple is said to be developing a new camera specifically designed for home automation, according to a report by Mark Gurman on Bloomberg. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo first mentioned this project in November of the previous year. Initially, it was described as a wireless model lacking Ethernet connectivity. Gurman’s update confirms that the device will be battery-operated with a potential battery life of up to one year on a single charge. The camera is expected to include facial recognition technology and infrared sensors. It currently goes by the codename J450.

Apple’s New Camera: A Versatile Addition to Home Automation
This upcoming device marks Apple’s first camera release since the discontinuation of the iSight in 2008. It could potentially be mounted on a television to use with FaceTime via Apple TV. However, its primary function would not be telecommunication but rather home automation. Apple anticipates that users will install these cameras throughout their homes to enhance automation. This could involve actions like turning off lights when someone leaves a room or playing a family member’s favorite music automatically.
Furthermore, the camera might also serve as a security tool, as suggested by Ming-Chi Kuo. It is conceivable that Apple would seize this opportunity to offer additional iCloud storage space for video recordings, accompanied by an alert service for security breaches. Additionally, Apple is reportedly developing a connected doorbell that could work in tandem with this camera. While Mark Gurman has not specified a release timeline, Ming-Chi Kuo anticipates a launch by 2026. This would likely coincide with the introduction of Apple’s homeOS, expected in the spring, which would integrate with the new home automation interface.
