Apple’s Foray into Smart Glasses Set for Late 2027

In a move reminiscent of Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses, Apple is expected to unveil its first pair of smart glasses by the end of 2027. These glasses won’t feature screens on their lenses. Instead, they will come equipped with cameras designed for visual recognition and video recording, an audio system to potentially replace AirPods, and a highly compact chip to manage various sensors and support Apple Intelligence features.

Development of a New Miniaturized Chip

According to Mark Gurman at Bloomberg, Apple has initiated the development of a groundbreaking chip, modeled after the Apple Watch’s processor but significantly more compact and lacking some components to enhance energy efficiency. The production of this new chip is anticipated to start around late 2026 or 2027, aligning with the product’s launch timeline in just over two years.

The Vision for visionOS and Future Technologies

Apple aims to incorporate visionOS into a pair of glasses that are light enough and possess sufficient battery life to last an entire day. However, current technologies are not yet up to par with these ambitions. For now, Apple is focusing on advancing underlying technologies, such as augmented reality displays and component miniaturization, without committing to a specific timeline. Meanwhile, Apple plans to enter the market with less advanced glasses, with these 2027 models being a major priority for Tim Cook.
