Apple’s Upcoming Smart Glasses: Multiple Designs in the Works

According to Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, Apple’s next venture into smart glasses will not feature a singular design. Instead, the tech giant from Cupertino is currently experimenting with four distinct styles and may launch several, if not all of them. The designs under consideration include a thick rectangular frame reminiscent of Ray-Ban Wayfarers, a slimmer rectangular version similar to those worn by Apple CEO Tim Cook, larger oval or round frames, and a smaller, more elegant oval or round option. These frames are reportedly made of a high-end material known as acetate, which is celebrated for its durability and luxury compared to the standard plastic used by many other brands.

Diverse Color Options and Iconic Design

Gurman adds that Apple plans to offer these glasses in multiple colors, including black, ocean blue, and light brown. Similar to AirPods and the Apple Watch, the goal is to establish a design that is instantly recognizable. Internally, the term “icon” is being used to describe this objective. A notable feature of the glasses will be the camera system, which will prominently feature vertically oriented oval lenses accompanied by peripheral light sources, marking a departure from the circular design seen in Meta’s products.

Release Timeline and Features

Consistent with previous reports by Gurman, Apple’s smart glasses are slated for a release around 2027, with an announcement expected towards the end of 2026 or early 2027. It’s important to note that these initial models will not include a display. Instead, they will incorporate speakers, microphones, and cameras, enabling functionalities such as making calls, accessing Siri, interacting with the environment, listening to music, and taking photographs. Many features will heavily rely on Apple Intelligence, particularly visual recognition capabilities. Glasses capable of displaying interfaces directly on their lenses are not anticipated to arrive until at least 2029.
