Apple Halts Development on Camera-Equipped Apple Watch Models
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple has reportedly halted its efforts on developing Apple Watch models that incorporate cameras. The Cupertino-based tech giant was working on two distinct designs that were initially slated for release in 2027. Just two months ago, Gurman reported that one design involved a traditional Apple Watch featuring a camera embedded directly into the screen, similar to the concept illustrated below. The other design was for an Apple Watch Ultra which would have included a camera on the side of the watch. Unlike a front-facing camera typically used for applications like FaceTime, this side-mounted camera was intended to capture images of objects or scenes for analysis through Apple’s visual intelligence feature, Apple Intelligence.
Uncertainty Surrounding the Project’s Future
Gurman did not elaborate on the specific reasons behind the project’s shelving. It remains unclear whether Apple has decided to completely scrap the initiative or simply postpone it to a future model. Nevertheless, Apple continues to pursue the integration of cameras in other devices, notably maintaining plans to launch AirPods equipped with cameras for Apple Intelligence by 2027. Additionally, Apple’s first-generation smart glasses, which are expected to launch by the end of 2026, will not include a display but will be equipped with cameras.
