Le Wi-Fi 8 se confirme pour début 2028

Recent Developments in Wi-Fi 8 Technology

After Mediatek last November, Qualcomm has recently shared updates on the progress of Wi-Fi 8, the forthcoming significant advancement in wireless communication standards. Currently, members of the Wi-Fi Alliance are actively developing this technology. It has been confirmed that the new 802.11bn standard is expected to be finalized by March 2028, with certification processes starting as early as January. The market should anticipate the availability of compatible products within the next three years.

Qualcomm has indicated that Wi-Fi 8 will not necessarily offer higher theoretical speeds but will improve actual data throughput, especially under challenging conditions. The working group is focusing on several technical initiatives under the “Ultra High Reliability” (UHR) banner. These initiatives aim to achieve a 25% increase in throughput and a 25% reduction in latency in environments with poor signal quality. Additionally, there will be a 25% decrease in packet loss, particularly when switching between access points. The Wi-Fi Alliance is also aiming for better interoperability of various wireless technologies within the same device and enhanced power management to extend the battery life of portable devices.

Apple, a member of the Wi-Fi Alliance, is actively participating in the development of this standard and plans to implement it in its future products. The company is particularly focused on these developments as it prepares to introduce its very first Wi-Fi (and Bluetooth) chip designed to replace the current Broadcom solutions used in its devices. This new chip is expected to launch this year with the iPhone 17 Air, set to be unveiled in September.
