Apple is reportedly developing a 13.8″ MacBook model with an OLED display set for a 2029 release, according to insights shared today by Omdia. While the analysts did not specifically mention the MacBook Air, they described this new model as poised to become a “key mainstream product within Apple’s future MacBook lineup.” To meet the expected high demand, Apple may look to multiple suppliers including Samsung Display, LG Display, and BOE for their supply needs.

Entry-Level Model Features

The upcoming entry-level model will feature a single-emissive-layer OLED panel. This contrasts with the proposed future MacBook Pro OLED, which is expected to include a Tandem OLED panel with dual emissive layers. This feature enhances brightness and reduces image retention. Additionally, the MacBook Pro with an OLED display is rumored to possess touch capabilities and could be launched as early as the end of this year.

Origin of the Rumor

These rumors are not without foundation. MacRumors notes that as early as June, ZDNet Korea reported on this specific screen size and indicated that Apple had sent out Requests for Information (RFI) to Samsung Display, LG Display, and BOE. “The 13.8-inch product for which Apple recently sent RFIs to the three panel manufacturers is expected to launch in 2029,” stated the publication, without committing to the exact nature of the device. The report aligns with expectations for a 2029 release of an OLED version of the MacBook Air, which is a year later than previous speculations had suggested.

Changes in Screen Size

With the transition to OLED displays, there is an anticipated slight increase in the screen size of the MacBook Pro models from 14.2″ and 16.2″ to 14.3″ and 16.3″, respectively. This change could potentially be achieved without altering the overall dimensions of the devices, by simply reducing the bezel size around the screen. It is possible that similar adjustments could be made to future MacBook Air models as well. However, it’s important to note that Omdia only mentioned a single 13.8″ model, while current MacBook Air models are available in 13.6″ and 15.3″ sizes.
