New Studio Display Expected by Early 2026, Says Mark Gurman
According to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, a new Studio Display is on the horizon, anticipated to launch in early 2026. Gurman, who first mentioned this model, codenamed J427, in February, initially indicated a late 2025 release. However, he did not rule out a possible shift to early 2026. The display is expected to retain its 27-inch size with no significant changes in design. In March, Gurman also hinted at a second model, numbered J527, but there have been no updates on that front so far. Additionally, an update to the high-end Pro Display XDR is not currently expected.

Technical Upgrades in the Second Generation Studio Display
Mark Gurman has not elaborated much on the technical improvements that the second-generation Studio Display might feature. In February, analyst Ross Young suggested a switch from LCD to Mini-LED technology. This change would include a backlight that can be turned off in small zones to achieve what are known as “true blacks.” This would also likely result in better color accuracy and enhanced brightness. For instance, while the current LCD Studio Display caps at 600 nits, the Mini-LED panel used in the MacBook Pro can maintain a brightness of 1,000 nits and can peak at 1,600 nits in HDR. There is also potential for the inclusion of ProMotion technology, which would offer smoother animations at 120 Hz, and support for higher speeds of Thunderbolt 5, although this remains speculative at this stage.
