Upcoming Release of M5 Chip in Apple Products
According to Mark Gurman at Bloomberg, Apple is set to introduce the M5 chip by the end of this year in two of its flagship products: the iPad Pro and the MacBook Pro. This introduction also suggests that the more powerful versions of this chip, the M5 Pro and M5 Max, will be ready within the same timeframe. It appears that the M5 chip is already in production, and the teams led by Johny Srouji are now shifting their focus towards the development of the M6 chip, codenamed Komodo, which is expected next year. Additionally, planning for the M7 chip, codenamed Borneo and anticipated for release in 2027, is already underway in Cupertino.
Developing a More Advanced Mac Chip
Mark Gurman also reports that Apple is developing what he referred to as “a more advanced Mac chip” named Sotra. Details are scarce at this moment, but there is a suggestion that something more ambitious than the current Ultra chip is needed to give the Mac Pro a significant edge over the Mac Studio. It is known that Apple has been exploring its UltraFusion technology to link four chips together (as opposed to combining two Max chips to create an Ultra chip), although this is just one possibility among others.
