In light of growing concerns about minor protection, following a lawsuit in the United States that accused ChatGPT of providing technical guidance which contributed to a teenager’s suicide, OpenAI has responded. As previously announced in early September, the Californian company has introduced a parental control system. This system is intended to help parents “connect their account with their teenager’s and customize settings to ensure a safe, age-appropriate experience,” according to a blog post. OpenAI notes that the deployment of this system has begun “as of today.”
Parental Controls on ChatGPT: Their Purpose and Activation Process
“Regulating ChatGPT usage at home” is the declared aim of OpenAI with the introduction of parental controls on its platform, which already boasts over 700 million weekly users. Starting Monday, September 29, 2025, parents can link their account with their child’s via an invitation system, found in the Parental Control tab within the settings. Once connected, they will be able to:
- Set specific usage times for ChatGPT,
- Disable advanced voice mode,
- Turn off certain features, such as memory or conversation history,
- Block image generation,
- Prevent the use of conversations for training purposes.

These settings are “optional and flexible,” and can be adjusted individually at any time, OpenAI clarifies.
Additionally, an “enhanced protection” feature automatically activates upon enabling parental controls. “Once linked, the teenager’s account automatically benefits from additional filters, reducing explicit content, viral challenges, sexual, romantic or violent depictions, as well as extreme aesthetic ideals, to ensure an experience suitable for their age,” the release states. Parents can deactivate this feature, but it remains inaccessible to teenagers.
An Alert System for “Serious Issues”
Moreover, OpenAI has developed an alert system for parents to notify them when potentially serious issues arise. If ChatGPT identifies signs of psychological distress in a teenager, “a specially trained small team assesses the situation,” according to the information provided. If a real threat is detected, parents are informed via email, SMS, and notification.
“We collaborate with mental health and youth specialists to design this system properly. No system is perfect and there may be times we send an alert without a real threat, but we believe it is better to act and inform a parent rather than remain silent,” justifies OpenAI.
To enhance its system, OpenAI is working on two additional projects still in development:
- Creating a protocol to contact law enforcement or emergency services in the event of a life-threatening situation,
- Developing a system to automatically determine a user’s age and direct those under 18 to a tailored experience.
As of now, no deployment date has been announced.
