Introduction of Parental Controls in ChatGPT
On September 2, 2025, OpenAI shared in a blog post that a new parental control feature will be added to ChatGPT. This new function will allow parents to link their ChatGPT accounts with those of their teenagers, enabling them to oversee certain elements. For example, they can:
- Set up “model behavior rules” to ensure ChatGPT interacts in an age-appropriate manner.
- Toggle specific features on or off, such as memory or chat history.
- Receive alerts “when the system identifies that the teenager is in severe distress”.

The parental controls are set to be integrated next month. This development is a result of collaborations with OpenAI’s “council of experts on well-being and AI” and the “global network of physicians”, both of which were established by the organization over the past year.
Parental Control or Damage Control?
The timing of OpenAI’s announcement is strategic. It aligns with a lawsuit filed in late August by American parents who claim the conversational agent encouraged their son to commit suicide, including assisting him in writing his farewell letter. OpenAI had previously addressed the issue soon after the incident, though their response was somewhat vague.
“Despite having protective measures in place, our systems sometimes do not perform as expected in sensitive situations. Over multiple interactions over a lengthy period, the model may eventually provide a response that breaches our protective measures. It is exactly these kinds of failures that we are striving to correct,” OpenAI wrote on August 26.
Even though the parental control feature won’t be available for several weeks, the company seems eager to communicate about its progress to reassure the public about the seriousness with which it handles these issues. “These efforts are already underway, but we want to outline our plans for the next 120 days so you don’t have to wait for product launches to see our progress. Our work will continue well beyond this period, but we are committed to deploying as many improvements as possible this year,” the company explains in the blog post.
However, while OpenAI notes that the minimum age to create an account is 13 years (similar to social media platforms), it fails to mention that for over a year, ChatGPT has been accessible without an account. In such cases, there is no age verification, and the parental control option is not applicable.
