Google Unveils Smart Glasses Prototype
Last night, Google revealed a prototype for smart glasses incorporating a display on one of the lenses, powered by Android XR. This technology allows the display of real-time directions, translations, interactions with Gemini, and previews of photos taken with the built-in camera. Additionally, the glasses are equipped with microphones and speakers. Early viewers have noted that the device is remarkably light and resembles a regular pair of glasses in its design.
Design and Visibility
As evident from the photo above, the display doesn’t occupy the entire lens but is instead a rectangular area with rounded corners. This part is particularly noticeable from certain viewing angles.
Prototype Stage and Future Plans
Currently, this prototype is not intended for commercial release in its present form—Google has not disclosed its main technical specifications or battery life. However, the company has established a reference software and hardware platform and plans to expand its partnership with Samsung, which is expected to launch its own version of smart glasses soon. Google has also declared collaborations with fashion eyewear brands Warby Parker and Gentle Monster to develop a range of stylish smart glasses.
Apple’s Foray into Smart Glasses
On the other hand, Apple plans to launch its first smart glasses by the end of 2027, initially without a display. These glasses will include cameras, microphones, and speakers, and will integrate Siri and Apple Intelligence, but they will lack a visual display at first. Apple aims to eventually incorporate visionOS into its smart glasses, focusing on maintaining a reasonable weight and good battery life. This remains a significant challenge, with no specific timeline set for these developments at this stage.
