During a hearing at the Google antitrust trial, Eddy Cue, a senior executive at Apple, shared significant insights into the company’s future plans for search engines in Safari. His views also revealed Apple’s concerns about the continued relevance of the iPhone and smartphones in general, as noted by Mark Gurman.

The Senior Vice President responsible for Apple’s services is not only apprehensive about the rise of artificial intelligence but also about its potential impacts on the longevity of smartphones as we know them today:

As improbable as it might sound, you might not need an iPhone in 10 years. […] Real competition only arises during major technological shifts. Such shifts open doors to new opportunities. Artificial intelligence represents one of these major shifts, facilitating the emergence of new competitors.

It is uncommon to hear Apple discuss the potential end of a flagship product, but Eddy Cue’s reflections indicate that the company remains pragmatic, fully aware that it cannot afford to simply rest on its laurels.

We are not an oil company, nor are we toothpaste manufacturers – those products will be needed forever… but you might not need an iPhone in 10 years.

The observation is clear-eyed; however, if Eddy Cue truly believes AI is the next significant step, it’s crucial that Apple begins to catch up, one way or another. No matter how powerful AI becomes, it will always require a device to operate. This is where long-term research into augmented reality glasses comes into play, with hopes that Meta doesn’t reach the finish line first.
