Apple’s Leadership Considered Acquiring Perplexity AI and Mistral AI

According to a report by The Information, Apple’s executives have recently contemplated making acquisition offers for Perplexity AI and Mistral AI. These possibilities were first hinted at by Mark Gurman on Bloomberg during June and July, and it has now been confirmed that these ideas had strong backing from Eddy Cue, who oversees the company’s services. In the past, Cue has shown interest in acquiring major companies like Netflix and Tesla. On the other hand, other Apple leaders, such as Craig Federighi, who is responsible for software engineering in Cupertino, were reportedly more hesitant, believing in the potential to develop internal alternatives.

Apple’s Approach to Acquisitions and Future Plans

During the announcement of Apple’s latest financial results, CEO Tim Cook expressed openness to acquisitions that could expedite Apple Intelligence’s roadmap. Traditionally, Apple has not engaged in large-scale acquisitions, with its biggest being the purchase of Beats in 2014 for three billion dollars. Currently, Apple has indicated to its bankers that it plans to continue focusing on smaller acquisitions. However, other strategies are being explored to enhance Apple Intelligence and Siri, especially if the development of the new version of the voice assistant, scheduled for 2026, is delayed. The latest updates suggest that Apple has approached Google to develop a derivative model of artificial intelligence based on Gemini, which could potentially replace Siri’s engine if necessary.
