Google has introduced a beta feature in the United States called Personal Intelligence for its Gemini application. This feature enhances the AI assistant’s ability to deliver tailored responses by utilizing the user’s Google ecosystem data. This update is a significant milestone in Google’s ongoing effort to develop a personal, proactive, and powerful assistant.

An AI that Thinks with Your Google Data
Unlike the existing capabilities of Gemini which only fetch isolated pieces of information, Personal Intelligence enables the AI to think across multiple data sources at once. Josh Woodward, VP of Google Labs and Gemini, states that the feature’s main strengths are “the ability to reason through complex sources and retrieve specific details from, for instance, an email or a photo to answer your question.”
The Google applications that are compatible include:
- Google Workspace: Gmail, Calendar, Drive,
- Google Photos: photo and video library,
- YouTube: viewing history,
- Search Services: Search, Shopping, News, Maps, Flights, and Hotels.

Essentially, Personal Intelligence analyzes data from connected apps to contextualize Gemini’s responses. For example, the assistant could combine information from Gmail with YouTube history or photos in Google Photos to make suggestions that are tailored to the user’s profile.
The interface also introduces a new “For You” chip on the homepage, displaying custom prompt suggestions. Users can also ask for recommendations on products, cultural content, or travel routes based on habits and preferences identified by the AI.
Granular Control and a Promise of Privacy
Personal Intelligence is turned off by default. To activate it:
- Open Gemini and go to settings (profile icon),
- Select Personal Intelligence,
- Choose which apps to connect (Gmail, Photos, etc.).
Users maintain granular control: they can precisely select which apps to connect, deactivate the feature at any time, or generate responses without personalization for a specific conversation. A temporary chat mode also allows using Gemini without Personal Intelligence being active.
Google assures that “Gemini is not trained directly on your Gmail inbox or your Google Photos library.” The system trains on limited information such as specific prompts and generated responses, after filtering or anonymizing personal data. Contents of emails, photos, and histories are only used to generate contextualized responses, not integrated into model training, the company promises.
Limited Availability and Acknowledged Limitations
Google acknowledges several areas for improvement in this beta version. The system may produce “inaccurate responses” or “over-personalization,” sometimes making inappropriate connections between unrelated topics. Challenges include timing and nuances, especially concerning significant relational changes or interpreting the user’s true interests. Google encourages users to directly correct the assistant when these errors occur.
Personal Intelligence is being gradually rolled out this week to Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers with personal accounts (business Workspace accounts are not eligible) located in the United States. The feature is available on Android, iOS, and web across all Gemini 3 models. Google plans to expand availability to other countries and to the free Gemini offering. Integration into Google Search’s AI Mode (still not available in France) is also expected soon.
