A little-known startup aims to transform how we connect our everyday devices by introducing a wireless technology that uses the human body instead of Bluetooth. Revealed at CES 2026, this innovation promises enhanced reliability, reduced energy consumption, and no interruptions.
The CES 2026 spotlighted once again the conflicting trends that are currently shaping the tech world. Lenovo showcased smart glasses that display essential information without the need to use a phone. Meanwhile, the brand Clicks catered to the nostalgic crowd with an Android smartphone featuring a physical keyboard, reminiscent of BlackBerry devices. From futuristic inventions to deliberate throwbacks, manufacturers’ creativity knows no bounds.
Yet, another innovation stood out for a distinctly different reason. The American startup Ixana unveiled a groundbreaking wireless technology that neither relies on Bluetooth nor Wi-Fi. Instead, it utilizes the human body as a transmission medium to connect devices like watches, glasses, bracelets, and smartphones.

Named Wi-R for Wireless Resonant Energy Link, this technology generates a highly localized electromagnetic field around the user’s body. Data transfer occurs within a radius of less than 10 centimeters, minimizing interference risks and enhancing the privacy of the exchanges. Engineers refer to it as a local body area network, or BAN, where each worn device can communicate with others.
According to Ixana, Wi-R boasts an ultra-low latency of just 1 millisecond and can achieve data transfer rates of up to 20 megabits per second. It consumes up to 50 times less energy than Bluetooth. For example, a pair of smart glasses can operate continuously for 8 hours with an activated intelligent assistant.
At CES, Ixana demonstrated several practical applications of Wi-R. One notable feature allows the transfer of a file from one smartphone to another by simply shaking hands, using compatible bracelets. Another application connects glasses, earphones, watches, and rings into a single seamless network. This solution could enhance the reliability of connected devices, which are often prone to instability over Bluetooth. The current limitation is that each device must be equipped with a specific Wi-R chip. However, the startup claims to be in discussions with several major brands to integrate this technology into mainstream consumer products.
