Trump Issues Tariff Threats to Apple
Recently, President Donald Trump has escalated his warnings into outright threats. Last week, he expressed his displeasure to Apple’s CEO Tim Cook regarding the company’s response to the imposition of significant tariffs on China (which are currently on hold) by increasing its production capacity in India. Now, Trump has threatened to impose a tariff of at least 25% on iPhones, regardless of their country of origin.
On his Truth Social platform, Trump stated, “I have long informed Tim Cook of Apple that I expect iPhones sold in the United States to be made in the United States, not in India or anywhere else. Otherwise, Apple will have to pay at least 25% in tariffs in the United States. Thank you for your attention!“
Feasibility Concerns for U.S.-based iPhone Production
As of now, there are no iPhone assembly lines in the United States, and Apple has previously indicated that it lacks the necessary automation technology to replace the vast workforce typically used in Asia without significantly driving up production costs for the American market. Trump’s demand from Tim Cook does not seem feasible for many years to come, and it would take additional years after that to set up the proper supply chain. Thus, Apple’s CEO finds himself in a particularly difficult position.
