A software glitch is preventing some Pixel users from updating their smartphones. The Google Play system is inexplicably halting updates, even on newer models. Google has acknowledged the issue and announced that a fix is on the way.
Updating a system should be straightforward, yet some users are facing an unexpected obstacle. For several weeks now, Pixel smartphone owners have been unable to install system updates. The error occurs as soon as the installation begins, with no further explanation provided. This malfunction is affecting Android 16, which is currently being tested on a variety of models.
Reports of this issue are proliferating across forums and social media. The bug is triggered when the user navigates to Settings > Security and Privacy > System and Updates to manually check for an update. The update downloads, but the installation fails, displaying a message such as “Update Failed.” Google has finally confirmed the problem on its support forums.

According to Google, users should not reset their devices as it does not solve the problem. The company has indicated that a fix will be released soon through an upcoming Google Play system update. In the meantime, affected users are advised to wait.
The issue appears to restrict devices to the system version of May 2025, even though the June security patch is properly installed. These updates are intended to fix security vulnerabilities or add minor features without needing a full system update. Although the latest updates fail without causing severe consequences, they prevent the installation of the most recent enhancements.
While Pixel devices are primarily affected, other smartphones are experiencing similar issues. Users of the Galaxy S25 running One UI 8 (based on Android 16) have also reported errors. Samsung has acknowledged the problem and has temporarily suspended Google Play updates on beta versions. A similar situation has been reported by some owners of the Xiaomi 15 Ultra, who are stuck on an older system version. Google has not specified whether the upcoming fix will apply to all Android models, but it could potentially resolve several issues simultaneously.
