It was previously anticipated that Apple would introduce a foldable product by 2026, and early speculations even hinted at the launch of two distinct foldable devices next year. However, recent insights from analyst Jeff Pu indicate a setback, particularly for the foldable iPad, now rescheduled for a 2028 release.
According to a research note by Jeff Pu of GF Securities, which was reviewed by MacRumors, the iPhone 18 Fold is still on track for a 2026 debut, with “steady progress” observed in the supply chain.
Pu further noted, “On the other hand, the 18.8-inch foldable device is expected to face a delay.” He did not provide specific reasons for this postponement. The analysis suggests that this larger Apple tablet won’t start mass production until late 2026 at the earliest.
This stands in contrast to Pu’s earlier reports from April, which predicted that both an iPhone Fold and an iPad Fold would debut next year.
The envisioned device is largely expected to be a large foldable iPad with a display ranging between 18.8 inches and 20 inches, which would serve as a hybrid between an iPad and a MacBook.
Inconsistent Speculations
Prior leaks, including a five-year Apple roadmap, indicated that the 18.8-inch foldable device would arrive in 2028. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman also supports this timeline, stating that the foldable tablet is expected to launch in three years.
Gurman further mentioned that the design of the foldable iPad would resemble two iPad Minis placed side by side.
Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has fluctuated in his predictions, alternating between suggesting a 2026 or 2028 launch for the foldable iPad or iPhone Fold.
Apple’s 2026 Roadmap
Current rumors mostly suggest that Apple will release an iPhone Fold as part of the iPhone 18 lineup, which will also include the standard iPhone 18, iPhone 18 Air, and iPhone 18 Pro models in 2026.
The iPhone Fold is not expected to revolutionize the market but, given Apple’s strong marketing and brand loyalty, it is predicted to be well-received as long as it maintains aesthetic appeal and functionality.
Initially, the tablet was anticipated to launch first. However, it now appears that the book-style foldable iPhone will be the first to hit the market.
