OpenAI Releases macOS App for Codex: Revolutionize Your Coding Experience Now!

OpenAI lance une application macOS pour Codex

The macOS application of Codex provides capabilities to manage multiple agents concurrently in separate environments, and it also automates repetitive programming tasks.

A “Command Center” for Development Agents

Initially introduced in May 2025 as a command-line interface (CLI) and subsequently launched on the web a month later, Codex now boasts its own desktop application, transforming it into a genuine “command center.” Available for download through the official site or via ChatGPT, this application is designed to “effortlessly manage multiple agents at once, collaborate on long-term tasks, and execute multiple projects simultaneously,” according to OpenAI.

Existing IDEs and terminal-based tools aren’t built to support this way of working, adds the company.

Currently exclusive to macOS, with potential future support for Windows, the application provides a “multi-tasking environment with agents,” the press release explains. Each agent operates autonomously within its own space while maintaining access to the overall project context. Developers can review changes made by an agent at any time, insert comments, redirect them, or switch to their editor to make manual adjustments.

To prevent any mishaps, the macOS version of Codex also includes a “worktrees system,” allowing multiple agents to work on the same repository “without interference,” OpenAI explains. “Each agent works on an isolated copy of your code, allowing you to explore different paths without needing to track how they impact your code base,” the firm continues.

Codex Enhances with Two New Features

In addition to the desktop application, powered by the GPT-5.2-Codex model like its web counterpart, introduces two new features that allow Codex to go “beyond simple code generation”:

  • Skills: Similar to the feature of the same name on Claude, Skills are “packages” that bundle instructions, resources, and scripts giving Codex the ability to perform specific tasks by connecting to other tools. “The Codex application includes a dedicated interface for creating and managing skills. You can explicitly ask Codex to use specific skills, or let it automatically select them based on the task,” explains OpenAI. The company provides a library of pre-designed Skills, enabling actions like converting a Figma design into code, generating images with GPT Image 1.5, or creating documents in PDF or .docx formats. It is also possible to configure your own Skills from scratch.
  • Automations: This feature, integrated into the desktop application, allows Codex to “work in the background according to an automatic schedule,” states the California-based company. Practically, one can set up a recurring task, with a defined frequency (daily, weekly, etc.), such as generating version reports, detecting bugs, or sorting daily reported issues. Automations can also be configured from their own interface.

Codex Now Accessible to More Users for a Limited Time

Possibly aware of significant competition from Anthropic in the AI-assisted web development market, Sam Altman’s firm has seized the opportunity of launching the macOS application to extend access to Codex, previously available only to holders of a ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, or Edu subscription. “For a limited time, Codex will also be available to ChatGPT Free and Go users to help build more with agents,” announces OpenAI. “Usage caps are also doubled for Codex across all paid subscriptions during this period.”
