The Mistral Vibe CLI, an online command line coding assistant developed by Mistral AI, has received a significant update and has transitioned to a paid model, as announced by the French company in a press release dated January 27, 2025.
What’s New in Mistral Vibe CLI?
Since its launch in December and previously available for free, Mistral Vibe is a native CLI agent designed to generate, maintain, and deploy code more quickly using natural language instructions. Powered by the Devstral 2 model family, which was also introduced two months ago, the tool already offered “multi-file management, a smart reference system, and an overarching view of the source code,” according to Mistral AI. The newly released version 2.0 adds several new features for developers, including:
- Designing Custom Sub-Agents: Users can now create mini-assistants focused on specific tasks (such as code review, testing, etc.) and invoke them at any time.
- A Multiple-Choice Clarification System: As demonstrated in the video below, when a user’s request is vague or ambiguous, Mistral Vibe offers several possible options for the user to choose from.
- Pre-configured Workflows: To avoid repeating the same commands, users can record workflows and trigger them with a slash command (like /deploy, /docs, etc.).
- A Unified Agent Mode System: Mistral Vibe 2.0 allows users to set up custom modes “combining tools, permissions, and behaviors,” explains the French company. This feature essentially allows users to switch contexts without changing tools.

To access these new features, “no manual update is necessary,” states Mistral AI.
Version 2.0 Marks the Shift to a Paid Model for Mistral Vibe
After two months of free access, aimed at persuading some developers to switch tools, Mistral AI has decided to adopt a paid subscription model for its coding assistant, with relatively attractive pricing. Subscribers to Le Chat Pro (€17.99 per month) and Le Chat Team (€29.99 per seat per month) will have full access to the tool, “with generous usage limits,” notes the French company, without providing further details. For very intensive use, it remains possible to continue beyond these limits with “pay-as-you-go rates with API tariffs,” it adds.
Mistral AI also indicates that the Devstral 2 model family is moving to a paid API access model. The pricing is set at $0.40 per million input tokens and $2 per million output tokens. The Devstral 2 Small API is available at a lower price.
