Meta’s AI Now Turns Your Photos Into Ready-to-Share Facebook Stories

Facebook

Meta has introduced a new feature on Facebook that uses AI to automatically create montages and collages from users’ photo galleries for sharing in their stories. This move comes as part of Meta’s ongoing efforts to revamp Facebook and encourage users to spend more time on the platform.

Rediscover Your Photos with AI

Currently available in the United States and Canada, this feature helps users rediscover “hidden treasures”—photos that have been forgotten in the endless stream of screenshots and daily snapshots. By introducing this feature, Meta aims to make sharing authentic moments effortless.

Once enabled, Facebook’s algorithm, with the user’s permission, analyzes the most recent photos on their phone to suggest compositions. These could be a summary of a weekend getaway or a birthday celebration collage. These suggestions are expected to appear directly in the news feed, Stories, or the ‘Memories’ section. Meta emphasizes that users have full control to publish, edit, or ignore these suggestions.

The Gamble on AI-Driven Creativity for Facebook

While the Stories format, introduced on Instagram in 2017, has become commonplace for its users, Facebook has struggled to popularize this format. With this update, Facebook aims to simplify story sharing by using AI to automate edits, add effects or music, and organize images by events.

Potential Privacy Concerns

However, this automation raises privacy concerns. To generate its suggestions, Meta offers to process photos in the cloud. This means that images might be temporarily transferred to Meta’s servers for AI processing. In its press release, the company assures that these media are not used for advertising or to train its systems unless the user explicitly chooses to edit or share the generated content.

Yet, with over 100 million active users on Facebook in North America alone, each user-approved suggestion also serves as a means to refine its algorithms. This not only helps improve the platform but also re-engages those who may have drifted away from the social network.
