To enhance the sharing of your best gallery photos and videos with friends and family on Facebook and Messenger, Meta is stepping in to handle the creative side using its AI technology. However, utilizing this feature comes at a cost: you must agree to let your media help improve the AI.

Meta’s AI technology is increasingly integrating into its applications. The photo tab in Messenger now offers the ability to generate artificial images, and the text input bar includes a new Write with Meta AI button. Under the guise of simplifying user experiences, Meta is pushing the boundaries further by delving into your photo gallery.

Last June, we reported that Facebook was introducing a new feature to use your unpublished images to create AI-generated content. Before accepting this feature, we already urged you to consider how your media could be used. At that time, Meta claimed that your photos and videos would not be used to enhance the overall AI. It seems that this is no longer the case.

Meta to Use Your Gallery Photos to Improve Its AI

On October 17, Meta announced a new Facebook feature: it suggests AI-generated edits and collages of photos and videos from your gallery to share via Stories, News Feed, and Memories. The company operates on the principle that “many people capture moments of their lives but seldom share them.”

Facebook’s parent company aims to help users share the “hidden gems” in their gallery—those private, unposted photos and videos. How? By highlighting these images and suggesting creative montages and collages. Specifically, Meta will explore your gallery and upload your media to its cloud.

Meta emphasizes that the AI’s suggestions remain private: it is up to you to decide what you want to share, with whom, and when. The company particularly stresses that this feature requires your consent and can be deactivated at any time through your Facebook gallery settings. However, there is a catch to using it: if you modify your media with Meta’s AI tools and publish these contents, the photos and videos from your gallery will be utilized to improve the AI capabilities of Facebook’s parent company.

Nevertheless, this new feature is currently available only in the United States and Canada. Meta notes, however, that it will be rolled out in more countries over the coming months.
