Future Prospects for the iPad Pro: Possible Leap to M7 Chip
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the most advanced iPad could make a significant jump in its hardware by spring 2027, skipping from the current M5 chip directly to the M7 chip. Although it’s not confirmed whether the iPad Pro will incorporate the M6 chip expected later this year, Gurman speculates that Apple might introduce their M7 processor at the same time the updated iPad Pro hits the market.
Design and Internal Enhancements
The upcoming iteration of the iPad Pro is not expected to undergo major design changes, with updates primarily focusing on internal improvements. Gurman notes, “The updates will mainly concentrate on internal enhancements, including the integration of faster chips.” He also mentions that the new models are likely to feature a vapor chamber cooling system to improve thermal management, which would help the new chip maintain its performance over time.
Shift in Apple’s Chip Strategy
Last week, Gurman reported significant changes in Apple’s chip development timeline. The company plans to streamline its offerings by only advancing with the standard M6 chip and discontinuing the M6 Pro and M6 Max variants to hasten the development of the M7 generation chips. The M6 will be the first chip produced using TSMC’s 2nm process technology, enhancing energy efficiency significantly. It will also include a new GPU with two additional cores, a more powerful Neural Engine, and an increase in RAM speed from 153 GB/s to about 200 GB/s. For the M7 chips, Apple aims to further boost AI computation capabilities, featuring a new generation of Neural Engine and memory bandwidth reaching 240 GB/s.
Pricing Trends for the iPad Pro
Apple has recently raised the prices of the M5 iPad Pro in July, with the starting price now at €1,319, up from €1,119. Given the ongoing memory crisis expected to persist, future models are unlikely to see reduced prices. However, some M5 models are still available at the previous price through various retailers, and you can find all the details in our price comparison tool.
