The launch of a mobile version of Preview on iOS and iPadOS 26 brings a much-needed PDF editor to these platforms, akin to what macOS has offered for years. For those with an exceptional memory, the adaptation of Preview from Mac to iPhone (and iPad) might not come as a complete surprise. In fact, this topic first surfaced 11 years ago.
Back in March 2014, there was a buzz about Apple’s intention to develop a version of Preview for the iPhone as well as TextEdit. At that time, there were questions about whether these projects would be completed in time for iOS 8’s unveiling at the summer WWDC. Although this rumor did not proliferate, it may have been somewhat prophetic, as Preview eventually made its way to iOS (but not the text editor).
The Preview app now available largely mirrors its Mac counterpart, though it lacks some features. For instance, when opening an image, users cannot adjust its colors. Similarly, when viewing a PDF, it’s not possible to redact specific text passages. Nevertheless, these missing features might not be missed by the majority of users.
