A much-needed enhancement
One of the major criticisms faced by even the top-tier iPads is the limitation posed by Apple’s clunky iPadOS, which fails to fully exploit the robust hardware it operates on. However, this frustration may soon be alleviated as Apple is set to overhaul the forthcoming iPadOS 19 to make it more akin to macOS, reports Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.
In his most recent Power On newsletter, Gurman shares that iPadOS 19 is part of a broader initiative by Apple this year to introduce significant enhancements across its entire product ecosystem. The goal with iPadOS 19 is to harmonize the design across Apple’s suite of operating systems.
Gurman notes, “The focus of this year’s upgrade will be on enhancing productivity, multitasking, and the management of app windows, aiming to mirror the functionality of a Mac more closely. iPad enthusiasts have long been vocal about their desire for more robust capabilities.”
While detailed specifics were not disclosed, these improvements signify a major shift towards optimizing user experience. Over the years, Apple has incrementally upgraded its software, introducing features like keyboard and mouse support and the capability to manage external drives directly from the tablet with iPadOS 18. However, despite these enhancements, iPads have still not matched the performance levels of top MacBooks, despite having comparable hardware.
“For a long time, it has seemed that iPad’s hardware is ahead of its software capabilities,” Gurman points out. “This disparity is likely to be addressed soon.” From his insights, it appears that iPadOS 19 could share more similarities with macOS in its functionality.
Anticipations for WWDC 2025
The full details will be revealed at Apple’s WWDC 2025 keynote in June. While we wait, we can expect numerous leaks to provide hints of what’s to come.
It’s hopeful that we will catch a glimpse of iPadOS 19 prior to its official unveiling to gauge how it stacks up against macOS. Apple is also anticipated to release new iPad Pro models featuring the M5 chip this year.
Significant redesigns are also expected for Apple’s iOS 19, including a smarter, more seamlessly integrated Siri thanks to Apple Intelligence technology. This updated version of Siri was originally planned to launch with iOS 18 but was postponed due to unforeseen issues.
