In a bid to enhance the battery life of its upcoming iPhone Air, Apple is rumored to be considering the adoption of the more energy-efficient LTPO3 display technology.

This year, Apple is expected to introduce a brand new iPhone model characterized by its slim and lightweight design, set to replace the iPhone Plus. Temporarily dubbed the iPhone Air, one of the main challenges for this new device will be achieving sufficient battery life, especially given its necessarily smaller battery size. This issue of reduced battery endurance due to slim designs was also noted in our review of the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge.

Apple is known for its ability to finely tune its devices to optimize energy consumption, thereby easing the strain on the battery. One of the latest strategies from the tech giant involves leveraging an advanced OLED screen technology to minimize the display’s power consumption.

LTPO3 Display for the iPhone 18 Air?

According to the Korean media outlet The Elec, Apple is considering integrating an LTPO3 screen into the iPhone Air. The company is already familiar with this type of display technology, as it is used in the Apple Watch Series 10. The successful implementation in their smartwatches may lead to its deployment in iPhones.

LTPO (Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide) displays are made up of millions of oxide semi-conductors in the switching and control transistors, which manage the pixels. These displays feature two types of switches: one that is fast but power-hungry, and another that is slower but more energy-efficient. While LTPO2 screens prioritize performance over energy conservation, LTPO3 screens replace some of the faster switches with less energy-intensive ones, thereby reducing the iPhone’s power requirements and enhancing its battery life.

All iPhone 17 models are expected to come with an LTPO2 display, including the Air model. However, starting next year, the iPhone 18 Air might be equipped with an LTPO3 display. The challenge for Apple will be to balance energy efficiency and performance so that users do not notice any compromise in the usability and quality of their mobile screen.
