Opening Google Messages on a Monday morning to find a mix of personal SMSs from family and professional messages can be overwhelming. It’s a common scenario where you need to click into each conversation to decide whether it’s worth reading or ignoring. Google plans to simplify this process with a seemingly minor yet significant change that will enhance the day-to-day experience for Android users.
Round for People, Square for Brands
The primary update concerns the shape of the profile avatars. Personal chats will continue to feature round profile photos, while business accounts will switch to a square format with rounded corners. This modification will allow users to quickly discern personal messages from promotional content just by scanning their chat list.
Furthermore, verified business profiles will display a checkmark badge, which will be visible both in the conversation list and on the profile page itself. This makes it easier to identify the sender’s authenticity without the need to look for a hidden shield icon on the screen; the verification status will be prominently displayed.
Delete in Bulk Without Opening
As business messages become easily recognizable in the conversation list, users will have the ability to select and delete them in bulk without needing to open each one. This feature is particularly beneficial for those who frequently receive promotional messages via RCS, which in some regions, has become a nuisance. This visual layer adds to the functionality introduced a few months ago by Google, which allowed users to disconnect from business accounts.
Not Yet Live, But Ready to Launch
According to Android Authority, this new interface has been successfully activated in the beta version 20260424 of Google Messages. The features are fully operational (rounded squares, verification checkmarks, removal of the old shield icon). Information that used to be accessible by clicking the shield icon (verification status, lack of end-to-end encryption) has been moved directly to the business account’s profile page.
The rollout to the general public hasn’t been scheduled yet. However, when a feature performs well in beta and screenshots begin circulating, it usually doesn’t take long to make it to the stable version.
This update might not be groundbreaking, but it addresses an everyday annoyance without much fanfare or a major announcement. The best software improvements are often those that are hardly noticeable but would be sorely missed if they were removed.
