Google Messages has evolved to become the default messaging application on Android, supporting the RCS standard that is beginning to take over from traditional SMS. This protocol enables the sending of enhanced messages, including photos, read receipts, quick replies, and increased security. However, until now, it was challenging to determine which contacts actually supported this feature.

Previously, to check if a contact had enabled RCS, one had to start a conversation with them and observe the type of message indicated in the input field. This non-intuitive process hindered the adoption of this technology. As noted by 9to5Google and several Reddit users, Google has quietly resolved this issue in the latest beta version of its app. Now, the information is visible at a glance, even before sending any message.

RCS Badge Automatically Appears Next to Compatible Contacts on Android

The beta version 20250527_01_RC00 of Google Messages brings a welcome improvement: an “RCS” badge now appears next to the name of each compatible contact as soon as the “New message” screen is opened. This small visual cue allows users to immediately identify who is using this protocol. It enables them to more easily decide whether to send an enriched message or a simple SMS, depending on the available options. This enhancement contributes to a clearer interface and better adoption of advanced features.

This update comes at a significant time: since the release of iOS 18.4 in March 2025, iPhones also support the RCS protocol. It is now possible to send enriched messages between Android and iOS devices using Apple’s Messages app. Meanwhile, Google continues to enhance its application.

For now, the RCS badge is exclusively available in the beta version on Android. Other features are in development, such as group invitations via QR code or link, mentions with @, and quick removal of videos. The ultimate goal is to position Google Messages as a viable alternative to apps like WhatsApp or iMessage.
