The iPhone 17e is set to be the entry-level model for Apple’s next generation of smartphones. But how will it differ from the iPhone 16e?
Apple is aiming to expand its customer base. This year, the company introduced the iPhone 16e, a more affordable mobile device compared to other models in its generation, albeit with some technical compromises. Additionally, a new entry-level MacBook that incorporates an iPhone chip is expected to be released soon, further reducing the cost barrier for laptops bearing the Apple logo. The company plans to continue this approach with the launch of the iPhone 17e, unlike the iPhone SE models, which were not released with each generation.
Leaker Digital Chat Station has shared some initial details about the device. It is expected to feature a 6.1-inch OLED display with a 60 Hz refresh rate, similar to its predecessor. The camera setup does not bring anything new either. It will maintain a single 48 MP rear sensor and a 12 MP front camera with Face ID, which are housed in a notch rather than a Dynamic Island.

However, the iPhone 17e is set to receive a performance boost with the A19 chip. This is expected to be the same SoC that will power the standard iPhone 17. The iPhone 17 Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max will likely include a more powerful chip, the A19 Pro. The goal for this device remains the same: to offer high-end performance and iOS in a new, recent model at a reduced price. This approach has proven appealing to consumers: the iPhone 16e achieved strong sales, particularly in Europe where purchasing power is generally lower than in the US.
It remains to be seen what compelling features Apple will promote to attract users to this new version. From what we know so far, there will be few changes compared to the iPhone 16e. A better chip alone may not capture the interest of the general public. If the iPhone 17e does not offer a strong value proposition, the iPhone 16e, which will then be cheaper, could potentially overshadow it.
