Apple Targets Spring 2026 for Launch of New Entry-Level MacBook
Analysts at TrendForce are predicting that Apple plans to release a new entry-level MacBook in the spring of 2026. This compact device is expected to feature a 12.9-inch screen, according to details first revealed by DigiTimes in August and later confirmed by TrendForce. Previously, details about the screen size were somewhat vague, with analyst Ming-Chi Kuo mentioning in late June that it would be “around 13 inches.” This makes the new MacBook slightly smaller than the current smallest MacBook Air, which has a 13.6-inch display. The design is expected to utilize the space around the keyboard efficiently, ensuring no compromise on the width of the keys. According to Mark Gurman, the LCD panel on this model will be “less premium” compared to that of the MacBook Air, and it will come in four colors: silver, blue, pink, and yellow.
Under the Hood: Apple’s A18 Pro Chip
This new model has been identified in Apple’s code as “Mac17,1” and is rumored to be equipped with the A18 Pro chip. This marks the first time an iPhone chip will be used in a Mac, offering less power but also less energy consumption and lower costs. Performance-wise, the A18 Pro chip, which powered last year’s iPhone 16 Pro, is roughly on par with the M1 chip used in the 2020 MacBook Air. There are speculations that the observed model could merely be a prototype and that Apple might ultimately decide to incorporate the A19 Pro chip from the iPhone 17 Pro, potentially aligning performance with the M2 chip. However, this possibility has not yet been supported by additional sources.
Trade-Offs and Specifications
The use of an A-series chip means there will be some compromises beyond just power. For instance, it is already known that Thunderbolt 4 will not be supported, and the USB-C ports on this MacBook will have lower data transfer rates compared to the MacBook Air. There’s also a possibility that Apple might remove one of the USB-C ports or the MagSafe connector. Given the current high prices of RAM and flash storage, consumers should not expect very generous configurations in the entry-level model, which will likely start with at least 256 GB of storage. There is also a concern that Apple might reduce the RAM in the base configuration to 8 GB, though many hope this will not be the case.
Pricing and Market Positioning
Currently, the entry-level MacBook Air M4 starts at 1,099 euros on the Apple Store, featuring 16 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage. However, a less publicized alternative remains available with the MacBook Air M2, which is still offered by official retailers in a single configuration—also with 16 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage, and in a midnight color variant, priced at 799 euros. This pricing strategy is likely what Apple aims for with this new entry-level MacBook, especially as the MacBook Air is anticipated to switch to the M5 chip in the spring. An announcement could be made around the same time as the introduction of this new, more budget-friendly MacBook. Stay tuned for updates around March or April!
