Unexpected Developments in the Camera-Equipped AirPods Case

Recent reports suggest that Apple might release its first models of camera-equipped AirPods as early as September, according to Mark Gurman at Bloomberg. Previously, in June, Gurman reported that the release was postponed until 2027 because Apple wanted more time to refine the visual recognition capabilities of Apple Intelligence. At that time, he mentioned models under the codename B798. However, it appears that models codenamed B790 have been discovered in the beta version of iOS 27. Gurman indicates that these could be an alternative version (“Apple is known for developing internal competing versions of the same product”), likely less advanced but still slated for release by the end of this year.

New Models Anticipated at Apple’s Fall Conference

These new models could be unveiled at Apple’s fall conference alongside the new iPhone lineup. Apple might introduce them as an advanced version of the AirPods Pro 3, featuring small cameras integrated into the stem of each earbud as their main new feature. The cameras are not expected to be high quality enough for taking photos or videos but would support visual recognition features. Apple has recently introduced assistance features for the visually impaired, which could play a central role in these new AirPods’ capabilities.
