Delayed Release for Apple’s First Camera-Equipped AirPods
Mark Gurman has reported that Apple has postponed the debut of its first AirPods models equipped with cameras to late 2027. Initially, these devices, codenamed B798, were slated for release in September 2026. The Bloomberg journalist’s statement corroborates recent speculations about Apple’s concerns regarding the progress of its AI models: while the hardware is ready, the software is still under development.
Technical Challenges Behind the Delay
Previously, Gurman had hinted at a potential delay because the visual intelligence features crucial to these models’ operation were not fully developed. The cameras incorporated in these AirPods are not intended for capturing photos or videos, as their resolution is not high enough. Last week, Apple unveiled a major overhaul of Apple Intelligence with Siri AI, and a few weeks prior, it introduced features to assist visually impaired users, which could be a significant selling point for these upcoming AirPod models. Although these are exciting developments, they are not yet sufficient to warrant the launch of the new product line.
