According to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, Apple has indeed started developing a new version of the larger HomePod, but its release does not appear to be forthcoming, unlike the smaller model. The updated HomePod mini is expected to debut at Apple’s event on September 9, alongside a new version of the Apple TV 4K and a home automation hub.

Challenges with Siri AI Hardware Support on Affordable Devices
The integration of Siri AI on a cost-effective device like the HomePod mini raises several hardware-related questions. To operate the latest version of Apple’s assistant, at least 8 GB of RAM is required. This means the device would need to incorporate a chip that is both modern and powerful, which typically translates to higher costs. Currently, the HomePod mini operates on a modest S5 chip from the Apple Watch, equipped with just 1 GB of RAM. The new model is expected to possibly include an S9, S10, or S11 chip, which does not offer improvements in this area. It seems likely that Apple will rely on the integration of the N1 chip, responsible for handling Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth, and Thread network capabilities, to support Siri AI. This would potentially work by leveraging the processing power of a nearby device, such as the new Apple TV 4K or the home automation hub.
