Whether it was intentional or not, Google released the final version of Android 16 during the WWDC event. This means if you’re not a fan of Apple’s Liquid Glass, you might consider getting a Pixel instead. In fact, this major update has been rolled out earlier than usual to align better with the launch schedules of various manufacturers.
Android 16 is now available on Pixel devices (including Pixel 6 released in 2021 and 2022) and will be coming to Samsung, Xiaomi, Honor, and other brands in the coming weeks or months. The new version includes several significant improvements, some of which are inspired by iOS features.
Pixel users will enjoy a feature similar to iOS’s Live Activities. Google plans to collaborate with Samsung and Oppo to incorporate these into their dynamic notification systems. This highlights a unique aspect of the Android ecosystem: third-party manufacturers sometimes lead with innovations that Google later incorporates and standardizes across its platform.
Android 16 introduces an Advanced Protection mode. Similar to Apple’s Lockdown mode, it offers enhanced security by disabling several potential attack vectors: disconnecting 2G, blocking sites that don’t comply with modern security standards, and restricting USB functionality. For developers, there are new tools available to boost app performance, accessibility, and security.
Possibly because the update was released earlier than usual, two significant features are missing at launch. It will take a few months before the Material 3 Expressive design, which is unrelated to Apple’s Liquid Glass, either enhances or detracts from the Pixel’s appearance, depending on personal taste. The same goes for the DeX mode borrowed from Samsung, which will provide multi-window capabilities similar to a desktop system for tablets and foldable smartphones.
In addition to these updates, Google has rolled out a new Pixel Drop, offering unique features exclusive to its smartphones. Among these is the VIP widget, which allows users to consolidate information (such as the latest message, birthday, location, etc.) about their closest contacts.
