Sony INZONE H6 Air Review: Ultimate Comfort for Gaming at Any Cost!

The Sony INZONE H6 Air gaming headset continues the original and compelling design of the INZONE H9 II released a few months earlier. It is notably lightweight, weighing just 199 g, making it the lightest gaming headset from the brand to date.

As a wired headset, the H6 Air remains a premium model that focuses on sound performance thanks to its open design, a first for Sony INZONE. The brand thus promises an immersive and realistic experience.

The Sony INZONE H6 Air is already available at a suggested price of 200 euros. This price is high for a simple wired gaming headset, but it is justified primarily by the brand’s technical choices.

The H6 Air follows closely in the footsteps of the H9 II, with a similar design approach. The headset features a slender frame covered in fabric, topped with a suspended headband that mixes fabric and synthetic leather. The headband’s width adjustment is managed by a simple and practical system, providing ample flexibility to fit various head shapes.

The earcups are adjustable with a 180° pivot, allowing them to properly enclose the ears and also let the headset hang comfortably around the neck when not in use. The earcups can also pivot slightly in the opposite direction to enhance overall comfort. The memory foam, covered with a very soft fabric, contributes to the overall comfort of the H6 Air once worn.

Another crucial feature is the weight. Sony presents its lightest INZONE headset, as the H6 Air weighs just 199 g without the cable. In use, and given its well-executed design, it is one of the most comfortable gaming headsets we have tested so far. It’s so comfortable that you almost forget you’re wearing it, even after several hours of use. Impressive!

Beyond comfort, the INZONE H6 Air is also visually appealing. Very similar to the H9 II in terms of the headband and rounded earcups, it distinguishes itself with the metal construction of these components. Despite its lightweight, it exudes a real sense of durability and a premium feeling typical of Sony products.

Being entirely passive and analog, the H6 Air is sparse on buttons. It features a volume control wheel and a top button dedicated to muting the microphone. The microphone connects via a jack and follows the design of the one that came with the H9 II. It features a very long memory foam arm, reminiscent of broadcast headsets, designed to be positioned in front of the mouth.

Finally, the connection to the computer (or PlayStation 5) is made through a generously long jack cable. To take advantage of the advanced features promised by Sony, a discreet USB-C to jack adapter acting as an external sound card is provided.

Sony Inzone H6 AirPerformance: A Bold Hi-Fi Signature

The INZONE H6 Air is particularly anticipated for its audio performance. First, because it is among the few open gaming headsets on the market, and secondly because of Sony’s expertise in audio. The H6 Air uses drivers from the MDR-MV1, a well-regarded monitoring headset from the Japanese brand.

The headset offers a very balanced sound signature, with deep bass that still allows visibility to the mids for dialogue and the highs for details. Its technical characteristics and sound output indeed make it lean more towards a hi-fi headset than a typical gaming model. In games, it provides an airy soundstage that facilitates accurate localization of effects and ensures excellent immersion. These outstanding performances also make it perfectly suited for listening to music, which is likewise detailed and airy.

Its open design, in addition to contributing to the excellent sound reproduction of the headset, naturally impacts its use. The isolation is almost non-existent, both for the user and those around them. Therefore, it is recommended for quiet environments without nearby people. The INZONE Hub application (see the following section) allows, thanks to the USB adapter, the use of 360 Spatial Sound, which we prefer not to use as the stereo output is already impressive.

The built-in microphone provides a rather satisfactory voice capture. The audio is detailed and uncompressed, although the microphone remains sensitive to breaths and breathing. Moreover, it lacks any noise reduction system and thus remains sensitive to noisy environments. Care should be taken, as at high listening volumes, it may pick up certain sounds from the headset.

Sony Inzone H6 AirCustomization, PC Only

On PlayStation 5, customization of the H6 Air is limited since the headset connects directly to the controller via the jack port. PC players have better options thanks to compatibility with the INZONE Hub application, shared across various devices in the range. However, it is essential to use the adapter provided with the headset.

The application is clear and easy to use while remaining identical, in terms of options, to what we found for other headsets from the brand. We first benefit from a basic 10-band equalizer, associated with various factory presets. The equalizer obviously allows the creation of a custom profile. Spatial sound is also available through this interface but offers no settings.

Finally, a few options related to the microphone are available. We especially note the management of the sidetone which, despite being dependent on the USB adapter, is almost delay-free.
