MacBook Neo 2 Expectations: Release Date and Key Features Revealed!

Qu'attendre du MacBook Neo 2, et quand ?

Introducing the MacBook Neo

Last week, Apple unveiled the MacBook Neo, potentially the first in a long series of budget-friendly laptops. This initial version comes equipped with an A18 Pro chip and 8GB of RAM, offering two storage capacity options: 256GB for €699 and 512GB for €799. The latter model includes a Touch ID fingerprint sensor. While this Mac makes several technical concessions compared to the MacBook Air M5, few are seen as deal-breakers for its target audience. Early reviews praise the MacBook Neo for its high value for money, positioning it among the best in the market.

The Speculative Future of MacBook Neo 2

It’s still too early to pinpoint the exact specifications of the MacBook Neo 2, and it’s likely that Apple will first gauge market reactions before finalizing decisions in the coming months. However, some assumptions can be made.

Firstly, Apple tends not to overhaul its designs annually, especially for entry-level products. Therefore, the MacBook Neo 2 is expected to largely retain the original design with potential minor tweaks if significant issues are identified. However, don’t expect major changes like a larger screen or a thinner chassis that would require a complete redesign, at least not in the second version.

Secondly, an update to the MacBook Neo would naturally include a new chip, likely at least the A19 Pro, with performance roughly on par with the M2 chip, whereas the current A18 Pro chip is more comparable to the M1. Notably, the A19 Pro (currently featured in the iPhone 17 Pro) comes with 12GB of RAM, providing a significant memory upgrade from the 8GB in the A18 Pro.

Thirdly, as an entry-level offering, the MacBook Neo is not expected to encroach on the features of Apple’s higher-end models like the MacBook Air. This means that storage capacities, which have recently doubled in the MacBook Air, are unlikely to see changes any time soon.

Potential Revisions Based on Feedback

If certain technical compromises negatively impact sales, Apple might reconsider some features. Initial feedback points to several shortcomings: the lack of keyboard backlighting, absence of a True Tone sensor for screen color calibration, no anti-reflective coating, missing fast charging, and the limitation of the second USB-C port to USB 2.0 due to the use of an iPhone chip. Additionally, integrating a touchscreen as seen in the upcoming MacBook Pro M6 is not a priority.

Looking Ahead: MacBook Neo 2 Launch Timeline

Apple typically does not refresh its product lines more than once a year, so the MacBook Neo 2 is not expected to launch until early 2027. It wouldn’t be surprising if Apple chooses to wait longer to maximize the profitability of its A18 Pro chip production line. There’s plenty of time to refine our expectations for the MacBook Neo 2. Meanwhile, the first-generation MacBook Neo is available on our price comparison tool, with promotional deals already starting to emerge.
