Discovering the health of your iPad’s battery is unexpectedly challenging. Even with the release of iPadOS 18, a dedicated battery health feature remains absent for most models, except the latest iPad Pro and iPad Air which include specific Battery Health menus.
Maintaining awareness of your iPad’s battery health is crucial not just for personal knowledge, but also for Apple’s service considerations.
Under Apple Care Plus, iPad batteries are only replaced for free if they fall below 80% of their original capacity. Knowing your battery’s health beforehand can save you time and effort when scheduling a service appointment with an Apple Genius.
Your iPad likely stores crucial battery information already, though accessing it can be cumbersome unless you dive into device analytics or use a simple shortcut we’re about to explain.
Here’s how you can check your iPad’s battery health without any additional apps, and before Apple possibly includes a Battery Health feature in iPadOS.
Checking Battery Health on iPad Pro 2024 or iPad Air 2024
Owners of the most recent iPad Pro (2024 with M4 chip) or iPad Air (2024 with M2 chip) have a straightforward method to assess their device’s battery health.
For those with older models, please see the instructions in the next section.
Navigate to the Battery Health Menu
Open the Settings app, tap Battery, then select Battery Health. This section provides a summary of your battery’s condition, its cycle count and maximum charge, and an option to limit charging to 80% to preserve battery longevity.
Methods to Check Your Older iPad’s Battery Health
We will first outline a more detailed method to check your iPad’s battery health. Additionally, we’ll discuss a simpler approach using iOS/iPadOS Shortcuts later on.
1. Access Settings > Privacy & Security > Analytics & Improvements
Launch the Settings app, navigate to Privacy & Security, then select Analytics and Improvements.
2. Enable Share iPad Analytics, then Access Analytics Data
For some users, this step might be a hurdle. The only way to retrieve battery health data is if you have consented to share it with Apple.
If you previously opted out of sharing analytics, you will need to enable Share iPad Analytics and wait a day or two for the data to be recorded. Once it’s available, select Open Analytics Data.
3. Open a Recent File, then Copy the Last Text Block
Select a file from the top of the list, scroll to the bottom, and copy the last continuous block of text. Look for a file named Analytics-year–month–day-time.ips.ca.synced, ideally with the most recent date. You might need to choose a file from a previous day to find the necessary information.
Opening the file reveals a mass of complex text. Scroll to the end, select, and copy the last block of text. You should notice several mentions of “battery” to confirm you’re looking at the right section.
4. Paste the Text and Look for last_value_MaximumCapacityPercent
Open a text editing application like Notes or Google Docs that supports searching. Paste the copied text and search for “MaximumCapacityPercent” to find the crucial number representing your iPad’s current battery capacity compared to its original state. While this gives a good indication of battery health, it may not be exact.
If you find your MaximumCapacityPercent to be over 100, or if you want a clearer understanding of your iPad’s battery condition, proceed to the next step.
5. Calculate Accurate Battery Capacity
In the same text block, locate two values: MaximumFCC and NominalChargeCapacity, and write them down. The first indicates the mAh capacity of your iPad’s battery when new, while the second shows its capacity at the data capture time.
Additionally, find the rated battery capacity for your iPad model from an online specs page, as
