Subscribers of Freebox Révolution and Mini 4K, it’s time to part ways with a classic Free technology. The company has informed its customers via email that it will discontinue the Femtocell service by the beginning of the school year. This move aligns with the aging nature of the service, which likely won’t be missed much.
As Free has just made a delightful announcement for Freebox Révolution users, it also has another update for its subscribers. In an email sent to Freebox Mini 4K and Révolution customers, Free has declared that it will terminate its long-standing Femtocell technology as of September 1, 2025, according to reports from Busyspider. Introduced in 2013 to boost network coverage for Free Mobile subscribers, the Femtocell converted these boxes into personal mini 3G antennas, enabling voice calls, text messages, and data connections.
Phasing Out the Outdated Femtocell
The operator’s decision to discontinue the Femto shouldn’t come as a shock: the gradual phase-out of Femtocell technology was already hinted at in 2021. Several reasons account for this decision: significant enhancements to Free’s mobile network, the obsolescence of 3G due to the advancement to 4G/5G networks, and the introduction of an alternative technology in 2022, VoWiFi (Voice over Wi-Fi). It’s clear that Femtocell technology has become outdated. In fact, the device has not been provided to new Free customers for nearly four years, and newer Freebox models such as the Ultra and Pop are not equipped with Femtocell.
No need to worry if you’ve been using the Femtocell technology until now: Free recommends switching to VoWiFi for making calls. To do this, simply connect to a Wi-Fi network from any box, regardless of the operator. Of course, your phone must be compatible with this technology, but most mobiles older than five years already are.

Regarding the devices, the operator is not currently asking for them back: you will need to return the Femtocell device along with your Freebox Révolution if you decide to cancel your subscription. As for the Mini 4K box, the Femto technology is integrated directly into the device. This decision is part of a modernization strategy, as Free continues to roll out VoWiFi and 5G technologies.
