Honor has boldly declared its Magic V5 as the thinnest foldable smartphone in the world, setting the stage for its unveiling a week before Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 7, which could have claimed the same title.
Samsung recently confirmed the date for its upcoming Galaxy Unpacked event, which is scheduled for July 9. At this event, Samsung plans to introduce the new Galaxy Z Fold 7. However, it seems that a rival is trying to steal some of the spotlight. Honor announced that its Magic V5, a direct competitor to the Z Fold 7 in the foldable smartphone market, will be revealed on July 2, a full week earlier.
Beyond just getting a jump on the calendar, Honor has more up its sleeve. While the specifications of the Z Fold 7 have yet to be officially released—though leaks have provided a glimpse— the Chinese manufacturer claims that its Magic V5 will be thinner than the Galaxy Z Fold 7, and aims to become the thinnest mobile device worldwide with this type of design.
Could the Magic V5 Outshine the Galaxy Z Fold 7 in Slimness?
Honor openly compares itself to Samsung, stating that the Magic V5 “is designed to go head-to-head with the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 7” and that it will offer “a compelling alternative for users seeking cutting-edge design, performance, and portability”. The manufacturer is no longer playing it safe and hopes to capture more attention by directly challenging the undisputed market leader in sales.
When it was released, the Magic V3 was the thinnest foldable smartphone on the market at 9.3 mm thick. Since then, OPPO launched the Find N5, which set a new record at 8.93 mm. According to Honor’s announcements, the Magic V5 is expected to be even thinner. Meanwhile, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is reported to be thinner than its predecessor, the Z Fold 6, at 8.9 mm. However, this might not be enough to surpass the Magic V5.
It’s important to note that the global launch of the Z Fold 7 on July 9 will see the smartphone available in France from July 23. The Magic V5, on the other hand, will initially hit the Chinese market and will be released in other regions shortly thereafter.
