How did Samsung manage to design a smartphone as slim as the Galaxy S25 Edge? The manufacturer shares some insights.
The Galaxy S25 Edge stands out for its ultra-slim and lightweight design, marking a significant achievement in smartphone engineering. Samsung discusses the unique aspects of developing this device, which currently has no equal in the market, pending the release of the iPhone 17 Air. “Achieving the perfect balance between structure and components required endless testing and prototypes, challenging well-established design standards,” Samsung stated in a press release.
The company highlights a “remarkable feat made possible by a new internal structure, featuring a novel mounting system that positions components with a precision of 0.1 millimeter.” This innovative method allowed Samsung to maximize space utilization within the device, fitting all necessary components, including the battery—which is somewhat underpowered—into a body just 5.8 mm thick.
Designing the Galaxy S25 Edge was a challenge for Samsung
Another technical achievement is the Galaxy S25 Edge’s vapor chamber, which is 10% larger than that of the Galaxy S25+. “This unique structure in the Galaxy range helps maintain the phone’s slim profile while effectively managing heat. To achieve this, a portion of the metal frame was removed to allow for more direct heat transfer from the processor to the vapor chamber. Additionally, a thermal interface material helps disperse heat from nearby components,” Samsung explains. Thus, the phone does not compromise on cooling, maintaining the full performance potential of the Snapdragon 8 Edge processor—at least in theory. However, during our testing of the Galaxy S25 Edge, we found the heat dissipation of the device less than satisfactory.
The brand also emphasizes the use of a titanium frame, previously exclusive to the Ultra models, for enhanced durability. The S25 Edge also features Corning Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2 to effectively protect the screen from impacts, drops, and scratches. The handling of the smartphone is quite comfortable thanks to its flawless design and lightness. However, its extreme slimness may seem somewhat superfluous in the end.
