The Galaxy Z Fold is the market-leading book-style foldable smartphone, and thus the launch of a new model is always highly anticipated. The newly unveiled Galaxy Z Fold 7 fulfills the promise of its predecessors by offering a large main screen that users can fold to enhance portability and one-handed use. What new features does the Galaxy Z Fold 7 bring? Let’s discover everything there is to know about it.
When is the Galaxy Z Fold 7 released?
The Galaxy Z Fold 7 was introduced during a Galaxy Unpacked event alongside the Galaxy Z Flip 7. The brand opened pre-orders immediately following the presentation. The first units will reach customers and store shelves starting July 25.
How much does the Galaxy Z Fold 7 cost?
Given that Samsung had already raised prices with the Z Fold 6, one might have hoped for price stabilization this year. Unfortunately, expect a new premium ranging between 100 € to 200 € depending on the variants:
- Galaxy Z Fold 7 256 GB: 2,099 €
- Galaxy Z Fold 7 512 GB: 2,219 €
- Galaxy Z Fold 7 1 TB: 2,519 €
All models are available in blue, black, and gray.
As a reminder, here are the prices for the same variants from the Fold 6 generation:
- Galaxy Z Fold 6 256 GB: 1,999 €
- Galaxy Z Fold 6 512 GB: 2,119 €
- Galaxy Z Fold 6 1 TB: 2,359 €
A Galaxy Z Fold 7 nearly 30% thinner
Design innovations are increasingly rare in this range, as Samsung has found a formula that works and the product has matured. However, while brands have been competing in thinness, Samsung hits hard with a 27% reduction in thickness when folded compared to the Z Fold 6 generation.
When open, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 has a thickness of 4.2 mm. When folded, it measures just 8.9 mm. This is an impressive result, yet it does not make it the best on the market in this respect.
The hinge is a crucial component of foldable phones and improvements were expected here. Samsung has made significant progress. The Z Fold 7 is built around a new hinge with enhanced structural integrity for better long-term durability. It includes more effective anti-dust brushes to prevent dust and debris from entering the smartphone. All this allows the model to boast an unprecedented IP46 water and dust resistance in its category.
An even bigger foldable screen
Several sources agree that the Galaxy Z Fold 7 offers larger display areas. The internal foldable screen reaches 8 inches, a significant increase from the 7.6 inches of the Z Fold 6. The screen’s fold marks are also less visible (though not completely gone). A slight disappointment: the sensor is no longer completely hidden under the screen. Samsung prefers a more traditional punch-hole that allows the 10 Mp component (which we will discuss later) to offer much better image quality.
The external screen, used when the main one is not needed, has a diagonal of 6.5 inches. It features LTPO AMOLED 2X technology and a variable refresh rate up to 120 Hz.
Samsung opts for Qualcomm chip for the Galaxy Z Fold 7
The Galaxy Z Fold 7 ultimately features a Snapdragon 8 Elite, instead of an in-house Exynos 2500, which was not chosen for the Galaxy S25 either. A benchmark performed under Geekbench reveals that the phone is equipped with a customized and overclocked version of the famous chip, with two Oryon cores at 4.47 GHz and six more energy-efficient cores at 3.5 GHz. The GPU is handled by the Adreno 830 – and all this is accompanied by 12 GB of RAM. This setup should efficiently power the new Galaxy AI features.
No changes to the battery and charging?
As we’ve come to expect, like many competitors, Samsung remains limited when it comes to battery and charging. The battery of the Galaxy Z Fold 7 has a capacity of 4,400 mAh, as with the previous generation. We might hope for a slight increase in battery life thanks to various optimizations and controlled energy consumption of the Snapdragon 8 Elite, but significant progress in this area should not be expected.
The wired charging remains limited to 25 W, and wireless charging to 15 W. This is well below what is observed with Chinese products.
A 200 MP camera sensor, but…
The Galaxy Z Fold 7 inherits the same main 200 MP camera sensor that the brand had integrated into the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition (SE) released last year (exclusively in South Korea and China). This is a significant increase in resolution compared to the 50 MP wide-angle of the Z Fold 6.
This sensor allows for capturing very high-quality photos before cropping or editing the image more effectively on the massive 8-inch internal screen of the Z Fold 7.
However, the rest of the camera sensors remain much lower, with a 12 MP ultra-wide, a 10 MP telephoto with 3x optical zoom – in addition to two 10 MP selfie sensors. We say goodbye to the technology of sensors hidden under the pixels of the internal screen. It had poor quality, and only displayed 4 Mp, making video calls quite unpleasant.
Shipped with Android 16
The Galaxy Z Fold 7 is the first Samsung smartphone (along with the Z Flip 7, which was released at the same time) to be natively powered by One UI 8, the brand’s overlay version based on Android 16. This update is rather minor, following a One UI 7 that reshuffled the deck with a brand new interface and extensive work on animations.
One UI 8 improves the formula introduced by One UI 7 and brings optimizations. A few new features are of course also there, such as the extension of virtual RAM, better management of alarm groups, or an option to filter files by application in the My Files manager.
Samsung guarantees seven years of Android updates and security patches for its high-end smartphones. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 will therefore benefit from long-term software support, even though we know that after a few years, Samsung tends to take time to deploy updates on its devices.
What’s the future for the S Pen?
Despite the official announcement of the Z Fold 7, this issue remains somewhat unclear. In order to reduce the thickness of its smartphone, Samsung may have been forced to remove the digitizer integrated into the screen. This component is used to read data related to the S Pen and is (so far) essential for the stylus to function properly. If this removal of the digitizer is confirmed, two scenarios emerge.
The first is the incompatibility of the Galaxy Z Fold 7 with the S Pen. Samsung has already decided to remove Bluetooth support for the stylus of the Galaxy S25 Ultra, also to save space and make the mobile thinner. The manufacturer has shown that it is willing to make sacrifices in this feature to enhance the design of its devices. The other possibility is that the manufacturer has managed to develop a new technology for reading data entered by the S Pen, more discreet, or even integrated into the screen.
