The End of the Notch Era for Apple’s High-End Laptops

According to Mark Gurman at Bloomberg, Apple’s future M6 generation MacBook Pros are set to adopt a design akin to the iPhone’s Dynamic Island, featuring a punch-hole design as illustrated below. This will allow Apple to utilize software on macOS to expand this area for displaying notifications, live activities, and shortcuts to ongoing tasks.

Design Adjustments and Face ID Considerations

The punch-hole is expected to be narrower than the iPhone’s since the MacBook Pro does not house as many components, lacking Face ID sensors. Although Apple is contemplating adding Face ID to its MacBook Pro lineup, it might take several years of development to overcome the challenges posed by the device’s thinness.

OLED Display and Other Enhancements

The arrival of Dynamic Island is likely to coincide with the introduction of an OLED display, reaffirmed by Mark Gurman. This display is expected to be a Tandem OLED panel with two emissive layers to reduce image retention. OLED panels allow for perfect contrast with each pixel emitting its own light. Since 2021, the MacBook Pro has featured “true blacks” with its Mini-LED display, but the backlighting is less precise and can only be turned off in small zones. With Apple planning interfaces on a black background, this represents a significant advancement.

Introduction of Touchscreen and Hardware Innovations

Mark Gurman also reiterates that this M6 MacBook Pro will be the first Mac to feature a touchscreen. The traditional keyboard and trackpad setup will remain, with touch interaction being an optional alternative for users. In an exclusive tidbit, Gurman notes that the MacBook Pro M6 will incorporate a new reinforced hinge to prevent screen movements when the user touches the display.

The chassis is expected to be thinner and lighter, with a redesigned thermal dissipation system centered around the new M6 chips, which are manufactured using TSMC’s 2-nanometer process. Additionally, the integration of a C2 modem for cellular options, and either the N1 chip or the upcoming N2 chip for more efficient management of Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Thread network, are anticipated. These improvements should lead to better energy efficiency, potentially maintaining or even increasing battery life despite the thinner design.

Release Schedule and Pricing

The delay of the M5 Pro and M5 Max models, expected to launch in early 2026, might push back the release of this new M6 generation. Gurman is uncertain, suggesting a release around “late 2026 or early 2027.” He also fears that the price of these machines could rise “by a few hundred dollars”, which is why Apple is likely to keep a 14-inch MacBook Pro with the current design as a more affordable option in its lineup.
