Exploring online dating can often be less than delightful, and even with platforms like Tinder, there seems to be a lack of fresh ideas, even in the metaverse. Could we be on the brink of a new era in dating thanks to Facebook?

From uninspiring profiles to the endless scrolling that social media has conditioned us to endure, many users are getting tired. This is what Meta aims to address with Facebook Dating by incorporating a new set of tools powered by artificial intelligence.
A New Assistant for Making Connections?
Meta announced this Monday that they have introduced an integrated chatbot in Facebook Dating, which quietly launched in Europe in 2020. This update is designed to save users from spending hours endlessly swiping through profiles. Instead, users can input a customized request, and the AI will select compatible profiles for them.
For instance, Meta demonstrated a specific scenario where a user asks the AI to “find a techno enthusiast in Brooklyn who loves EDM concerts.” The tool, which utilizes Meta’s Llama models, does more than just matchmake. It also offers tips on profile improvement, suggests venues for a first date, and advises on how to initiate conversation.
Meta assures that all these suggestions are based only on the information users have chosen to make public, likely a nod to past controversies involving Meta AI’s training processes.
The “Meet Cute” Feature: Algorithm-Driven Encounters
In addition, Meta has rolled out the “Meet Cute” feature, which automatically assigns one match per week. This feature aims to cut down on hesitation and offer up potentially surprising encounters. However, users have the option to continue the conversation or opt out quickly.
These innovations are part of a clear strategy by Meta to attract young adults. According to the company, hundreds of thousands of them in the US and Canada create a profile on Facebook Dating each month, with a reported 10% increase in matches year over year.
AI: The New Frontier for Dating Apps?
Facebook isn’t alone in the dating arena, but unlike many of its competitors, it emphasizes its free model, which requires no subscriptions or paid features. However, as other companies like Bumble are already considering a fully AI-driven user experience, the question remains whether Meta will be able to stand out in this increasingly crowded field.
