The upcoming OnePlus 15 is expected to feature a LIPO screen that is flat yet boasts extremely thin edges. This could signal the end of curved screens in smartphones.

While not yet officially announced, the OnePlus 15 is increasingly becoming a topic of discussion. The device is anticipated to include the newly unveiled DetailMax Engine for imaging by the brand, promising sharp and accurate photos. However, the manufacturer is also betting on a new display technology to set its flagship apart from other premium smartphones.

According to Digital Chat Station, the OnePlus 15 will sport a new BOE panel that may position it as the top smartphone on the market in terms of screen quality. The leaker notes that it will feature “several exclusive cutting-edge technologies.” Previous reports suggested a refresh rate of up to 165 Hz, a first for a non-gaming oriented smartphone. Yet, this might not be its most noteworthy feature.

Is This the End for Curved Screens?

The display of the OnePlus 15 is expected to measure about 6.78 inches with a 1.5K resolution, making it slightly smaller than the OnePlus 13. However, the overall dimensions of the smartphone should remain quite similar. This is likely because OnePlus might be ditching curved edges in favor of a flat screen, yet with very slim bezels. To achieve a flat design with almost no borders, the brand would utilize LIPO technology.

Similarly, the Xiaomi 16 Ultra is expected to follow this trend. Xiaomi would also employ a LIPO screen on its upcoming premium smartphone, allowing it to transition from a curved to a flat design. The edges could be reduced to 1.1 mm or 1.2 mm on all four sides of the device, a design approach that might be similar for the OnePlus 15.

Curved screens are gradually being phased out by the industry. They were once popular for providing a borderless, more immersive display experience, but at the cost of durability and ergonomics. With advancements in flat-screen technology that offer minimal bezels, it wouldn’t be surprising to see curved screens quickly vanish from the market.
