Foxconn Targets Automation: Revolutionizing Production Lines!

Foxconn vise l'automatisation de ses lignes de production

Foxconn’s Investment in Artificial Intelligence

Foxconn, a principal assembly partner for Apple’s iPhone and various other products, is making strides in artificial intelligence to enhance its production lines. During the Computex event, CEO Young Liu announced that the company is developing its own AI model named FoxBrain. This model is being built using Meta’s Llama 3 and 4 models, along with data collected from its operations, as reported by The Register. Foxconn plans to use FoxBrain primarily for creating virtual assembly lines, running simulations, and implementing optimizations before the actual deployment. It was also mentioned that some robots in their facilities are already being designed by other robots. Furthermore, Liu has committed to making FoxBrain open-source in the future.

The Human Element in Automation

Liu openly admitted, “We thought we could replace all employees,” but soon realized that it was not feasible. Nevertheless, the introduction of AI has enabled Foxconn to automate numerous tedious tasks, allowing its employees to focus on higher value-added issues.

Manufacturing Choices for Developed Countries

Young Liu points out that developed countries face two primary options for cost-effective manufacturing: encouraging the immigration of workers willing to accept lower wages, or outsourcing to countries with cheaper labor forces. He warned, “Eventually, we will run out of low-GDP countries” and highlighted the political challenges of immigration. Liu sees generative AI and robotics as solutions to fill these gaps. He suggests that as countries become wealthier, low-GDP tasks could be handled by generative AI and robotics, hinting that Donald Trump’s vision of assembling iPhones in the United States could become a reality, though it would not happen instantly.
