Advancements in Apple’s Smart Glasses
Apple’s ongoing development of smart glasses in Cupertino is evidenced by recent patent filings. A patent observed by Patently Apple reveals a design featuring batteries located on each arm of the glasses, with most of the electronic components, including the processor, wireless communications, and various sensors, positioned at the bridge between the two lenses. Apple has designed this configuration to distribute weight evenly, enhancing comfort for prolonged wear.

A small external camera, positioned near the nose and connected via a tiny connector similar to Apple’s Lightning connector, works alongside an infrared camera. These components are crucial for tracking eye movement and detecting ambient light without hindering vision. Unlike competitors who place cameras at the hinges, Apple’s design includes a single camera situated centrally between the eyes. Additionally, the nose pads on these glasses are designed to be interchangeable.
Shifting Focus to Smart Glasses
Tim Cook has reportedly shifted his focus towards the launch of these connected glasses, putting on hold the development of a lighter, more affordable Apple Vision headset. This strategic pivot allows engineers to dedicate their resources to the glasses project. Initial models, which could debut as early as 2027, might not feature displays. However, later versions expected around 2029 could include display screens. Apple plans to equip these glasses with a very lightweight operating system, which could display visionOS when paired with a Mac.
