Le futur d'Apple Intelligence entre les mains de Craig Federighi

Apple’s Siri Development Setback and Executive Changes

Following the troubled development of Siri’s new version, Apple declared in December that John Giannandrea would step down and introduced Amar Subramanya, a former employee of Microsoft and Google, as the new Vice President of AI. Subramanya’s appointment falls under the supervision of Craig Federighi, the Senior Vice President of Software Engineering at Cupertino. According to The Information, it was Federighi who initiated Apple’s shift in AI strategy, leading to a partnership with Google announced ten days ago.

Internal AI Strategy Overhaul

Last autumn, prior to the official announcement, Craig Federighi assumed control over Apple Intelligence and convened software and AI teams to communicate this renewal and express his dissatisfaction with the pace of progress within Apple Intelligence. The Information notes that his comments were not necessarily well-received by the AI teams. Known affectionately as “Hair Force One” for his impeccably styled hair, Federighi had resolved to incorporate a third-party model to avoid further delays in releasing the revamped Siri.

Concerns About Federighi’s Approach

The Information also highlights internal concerns regarding Federighi’s approach, noting his significant attention to costs and frequent skepticism towards uncertain investments. His cautious stance on AI initially led Apple to curb its infrastructure spending, predicting that most consumer applications would eventually be managed locally on the company’s devices. Federighi reportedly struggled to grasp a technology inherently unpredictable and challenging to control and had refused to develop certain features. For instance, he opposed a proposal by Apple Intelligence to reorganize the iPhone’s home screen, arguing that it would disrupt user experience.

Adapting to AI Innovations

Nevertheless, Federighi has since adjusted his views, particularly influenced by the achievements of ChatGPT. Plans are in place to launch a new version of Siri powered by a derivative of Gemini with iOS 26.4 in the spring, followed by a Siri chatbot in the fall. These integrations are expected to continue for several years, although Apple aims to eventually phase them out and continue enhancing its proprietary models for more efficient local operation. To accelerate development, the company is also considering acquiring startups.
