Leadership Changes at Apple Following Siri Development Setbacks
John Giannandrea, Apple’s Senior Vice President in charge of Machine Learning and AI strategy, will be leaving his role, as announced in a recent press release by Apple. He will transition into an advisory position before retiring in the spring of 2026. This departure follows a series of setbacks in the development of the new version of Siri.
Shift in Leadership for Siri’s Development
John Giannandrea was replaced by Mike Rockwell as the head of Siri in March, shortly after the delay of Siri’s new features to March 2026 was announced. It was also revealed a few weeks later that Giannandrea had lost his responsibilities over Apple’s robotics division. Journalist Mark Gurman reported that “Tim Cook has lost confidence in John Giannandrea’s ability to lead product development effectively.”
Managing Public Perception
According to Mark Gurman, Apple chose to manage the situation quietly to avoid abrupt departures that might have led to negative media coverage. In an effort to save face, Tim Cook praised Giannandrea in the press release, stating, “We are grateful to John for his pivotal role in advancing our AI efforts, which have allowed Apple to continue innovating and enhancing our users’ lives.”
New Appointment in AI Leadership
Apple also announced the hiring of Amar Subramanya, who joins Apple after a brief stint at Microsoft and sixteen years at Google, where he led the development of the Gemini assistant. Subramanya will take on the role of Vice President of AI, reporting directly to Craig Federighi, the head of software engineering. “Mr. Subramanya will oversee key areas including Apple Foundation models, machine learning research, as well as AI security and evaluation. Mr. Giannandrea’s team will be handed over to Sabih Khan and Eddy Cue to ensure team cohesion,” the company stated.
Enhanced Role for Craig Federighi
Tim Cook expressed his enthusiasm about Subramanya’s arrival and highlighted an expanded role for Craig Federighi in AI. “AI has long been at the core of Apple’s strategy, and we are thrilled to welcome Amar to Craig’s leadership team and benefit from his exceptional AI expertise. In addition to strengthening his team and expanding his AI responsibilities with Amar’s arrival, Craig has been instrumental in driving our AI initiatives, including overseeing efforts to offer a more personalized Siri to our users next year,” Cook remarked.
Collaboration with Google on Siri’s Future
According to information from Mark Gurman, Apple has turned to Google for assistance in reviving the development of the new Siri. They have reportedly entered into a billion-dollar annual contract that allows Apple to use an AI model with 1.2 trillion parameters derived from Gemini, which the company plans to deploy on its dedicated Private Cloud Compute servers for Apple Intelligence. The launch of this new Siri is still scheduled for spring 2026, coinciding with iOS 26.4 and macOS 26.4 releases, and it will feature a “response engine” that functions as a search chatbot similar to today’s ChatGPT.
